A new frontier of high precision measurements with tmENV

Tech Insights

tmENV enables catenary wire measurements with LIDAR technology

The latest advancement in tmc’s Digital Environment Profile’s (tmENV) application of LIDAR technology has proven both very useful and efficient. While mounted on a track machine, tmENV’s rotating laser scanner provides crucial virtual images that are used for a series of high-precision measurements of the track’s environment. This in turn allows its users to monitor the status and condition of railway infrastructure, track machines and entire track maintenance fleets, pushing forward into the frontier of high-quality rail infrastructure assessment and maintenance. tmENV now also includes a catenary wire measurement system.

How does tmENV’s catenary wire measurement system work?

The track environment just became safer and better with tmENV’s new catenary wire measurement system. It allows for spatial imaging of the environment, detecting the contact wire’s characteristics such as height and stagger. To do so, tmENV operates with a highly specialized detection algorithm. The contact wire is also measured in reference to standardized measuring points on the rail. The new catenary wire measurement system of tmENV does not require hardware updates and can be upgraded anytime with additional software licenses.

Why should you use tmENV?

tmENV has an easy and intuitive to use platform that provides high speed measurements, presents no track closures, and captures multiple parameters, such as distance to the neighboring track, clearance profile, ballast profile, platform edges and now the position of catenary wires with one system. This innovative solution has increased employee safety as work no longer takes place on the track. In turn, resources are saved as less time and personnel are required. Through tmENV’s feature of data transfer to a cloud or an on-premises software, the data exchange is delivered both smoothly and securely.  With yet another feature, tmENV makes rail infrastructure monitoring better, safer and easier for all.
