Meet Martin: C++ Developer and conductor in his hometown

It gives us particular pleasure to introduce Martin, who has been a C++ developer in the tmc Linz team for almost a year. Martin is not only a talented software and hardware developer, but also a passionate musician. Read more about his work at tmc and his great hobby brass band music.

From FH Hagenberg to tmc

Martin first studied hardware software design at Hagenberg University of Applied Sciences and then went on to complete a Master’s degree in Embedded Systems Design. He came across the Viennese and Linz-based employer tmc at a careers fair last year. The digitalization of the rail industry appealed to Martin for a number of reasons, including the fact that some of his friends work in the rail industry, for example as train drivers. In November last year he became part of the Edge Computing team and works in tmc’s modern office at the harbour in Linz.

Hardware and software match

One of Martin’s main tasks at the moment is to make software, that has been developed over the course of 25 years, compatible with newly developed hardware. This serves to synchronize several measuring systems and as a central data interface.

Brass music as a passion and a hobby

Martin has been playing the trumpet since he was ten years old. He can now boast a gold badge for this instrument, which shows a very high level of training. Martin can also play the flugelhorn and practises a little on the French horn.
Martin has recently become the proud conductor of the brass band from his home town in Upper Austria. Brass musicians can join this band from the bronze badge for the respective instrument. For the position of bandmaster, Martin attends his own conductor course at the music school, which is held once a week for two hours, lasts four years and is very demanding, as Martin explains. The course trains prospective bandmasters in conducting techniques, music theory, arranging pieces of music and the associated pedagogy, for example.

Music events of all kinds

With his brass band, which currently counts around 45 members and has an average age of around 30-35 years, Martin performs at concerts, parish festivals, fire brigade festivals and various morning pints. The chairman and the board decide which events to play at, but as musical director he also has a say. For the performances themselves Martin chooses what is played and in which line-up.
His band is made up of a wide variety of wind instruments and the division suits him very well. There are clarinets, trumpets, trombones, horns, flugelhorns, tenor horns, saxophones, tubas, oboes and several percussion instruments.

In addition to the brass band in his village Martin is also the deputy leader of a youth orchestra in his village and three others. Young people under the age of 18 play together here; no badge is required to join. He also plays in the Upper Austrian state youth wind orchestra. Only musicians with gold badges in their respective instruments play there, which makes playing music together particularly smooth.

Even though it is a very intensive hobby, Martin really enjoys making music and is very committed. Congratulations on your great hobby, Martin, and thank you for the serenade together with your colleagues at our last celebration. We ourselves are always overwhelmed by the versatile talent that our tmc team brings to the table.

Have fun with your music and all the best for your future path at tmc.
