Meet Matthias: Master’s student and sport enthusiast

Matthias has already written his Master’s thesis in cooperation with tmc and, after successfully completing his studies this summer, is starting full-time as a programmer at the Linz and Vienna-based employer tmc. In his free time, Matthias regularly seeks out sporting challenges. For example, he has already run in the marathon in Madrid and has been practising calisthenics for years.

From student employee to apprentice trainer

Matthias, who originally comes from Salzburg, has been with tmc for just over a year. During the final phase of his Master’s degree in Software Engineering and Internet Computing at the Vienna University of Technology, Matthias began working 20 hours a week as a student employee at tmc. He also wrote his thesis in co-operation with the Linz-based technology company. He says that he benefited greatly from the fact that he had two supervisors for his thesis on “Geometry based open railway track extraction from open street map data”, not only at university but also at tmc. The fact that the algorithm created for a tmc project as part of his thesis was actually used made the final thesis particularly exciting.

Matthias also spent a semester in Barcelona as part of his degree programme. There he attended an English-language AI Master’s programme with a very international audience, which he enjoyed. He also attended a Spanish course and was able to make great progress in the language.

Flexible working models and young team

Matthias really appreciates the fact that he was given a lot of flexibility as a student at tmc and that he was always able to work his 20 hours around exams. Since this summer, Matthias has been a full-time member of the tmc team and works from the Vienna office. As before, Matthias works as a software developer in the backend area and is also doing additional training as an apprentice trainer, which he is very happy about.

In Matthias’ team, in which especially in the Viennese office there are many young employees, there is a daily stand-up meeting in which all team members report on what they are currently working on. Around 10-15 people from Vienna, Linz and India regularly take part. According to Matthias, the daily stand-up meeting is not only very informative, but also the ideal space to gather feedback and suggestions for the next steps.

Always ready for sporting challenges

In addition to his professional career, Matthias attaches great importance to sport. He regularly takes part in various sports and is constantly looking for new challenges and peak performance.

He is particularly fond of calisthenics, a fitness trend that involves training purely with body weight. He has been pursuing this sport with great ambition for several years. Matthias also trains just as diligently in the fitness centre.

He is also always interested in other sports, some of which he “only” takes up for around six months before moving on to the next challenge. These have included table tennis, paddle tennis, badminton, volleyball, boxing, windsurfing, sailing, climbing, swimming, running and cycling.

The next sporting hurdle Matthias would like to take is high diving. He has already conquered the 5 metre tower. A corresponding course starting in autumn should take him even higher and back down again.

Madrid Marathon

The last big sporting goal Matthias had set himself was to take part in a marathon. He chose Madrid for this, as the atmosphere there with rock bands along the route was particularly appealing. Matthias had been training for this event since last autumn. Despite an injury shortly before the event in April, Matthias successfully took part in this challenging run. Unfortunately, he was unable to achieve his personal goal due to the injury, but he is proud to have run his first marathon and can only recommend taking part in the Madrid Marathon because of the unique atmosphere.

Many thanks for the insights into your sporting experiences, Matthias! We wish you every success for your full-time start at tmc and many more extraordinary sporting challenges.
